2009 Challenger named “Most Appealing Mid-Size Sport Car”

Owners of the 2009 Dodge Challenger have named it “Most Appealing Mid-Size Sporty Car” in the latest J.D. Power and Associates APEAL study. The study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive and is based on surveys from the owners themselves. This year, more than 80,900 people who bought or leased a 2009 model-year car or truck responded to the APEAL Study between February and May. They evaluated more than 90 vehicle attributes after they had had their new vehicles for 90 days.
Racking up the awards, the Challenger was named AutoPacific’s Best in Class Ideal Vehicle Award for the Sporty Car category.

2010 Toyota 4Runner San Diego

From TheCarConnection.com by Nelson Ireson

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner has just made its debut at the Texas State Fair, and as expected, in many ways it's a throwback to the original 4Runner, bucking the trend of increasingly civilized paved-road crossovers for a rough-and-ready all-terrain feature set.

That's not to say it's not still as friendly on the road as any Toyota; ever since the original hit the roads in 1984, the 4Runner has been as much about comfort as it is about capability. But unlike some of the mid-sized SUV competition, Toyota has adhered to the 4Runner's off-road roots as well, sharing the same body-on-frame platform as the FJ Cruiser and growing both longer and wider than the current 4Runner.
Three trims are available on the 2010 4Runner: Trail, SR5 and Limited. SR5 and Limited grades add a chrome-plated grille insert, fog lamp bezels and front bumper molding to the Trail's basic layout, plus color-keyed front and rear over-fenders and chrome-plated side molding, roof rack and rear bumper. Integrated side-mirror turn signals are also standard on SR5 and Limited grades.
Gone is the option of a big V-8 engine, but nothing is really lost with a new 4.0-liter V-6 engine providing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, up 34 horsepower from the previous V-6 and even 10 horsepower more than the previous V-8. Toyota has done its best to balance power and efficiency in this engine, leveraging Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to help deliver low-end grunt and cruising efficiency.
Together with a more slippery exterior, the new 4Runner is good for an estimated EPA rating of 17 mpg in town and 23 mpg on the highway for two-wheel-drive models, with the all-wheel-drives good for 17 mpg in town and 22 mpg on the highway. That's an improvement of 1 mpg city and 2 mpg highway across the board over 2009 models.
For those that want slightly more efficiency and don't need the towing power of the V-6, a 157-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder is also available, rated at 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The four-cylinder is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.
A wide range of two-wheel-drive and part-time and full-time four-wheel-drive powertrain options are available, with the 4Runner Limited topping the off-road range with full-time four-wheel drive, a locking center differential and a three-mode console-mounted switch. To help increase off-road grip, all 4x4 models get a standard A-TRAC force distribution system, ensuring any one wheels with grip gets the power. A Crawl Control system is also standard on Trail grade models, which helps keep vehicle speed low for navigating particularly tricky or steep terrain.

Exterior styling is another major change for the 2010 Toyota 4Runner, with a new wider, more rugged fender and bumper design accenting new headlights and taillights that improve nighttime visibility. Seventeen-inch aluminum alloy wheels are standard on SR5 and Trail models, with 20-inch wheels standard on the Limited, with all models getting a full-size spare.
It's not all about getting over big rocks or down to the hardware story, however. The 2010 4Runner also offers a lot of entertainment features, including a standard five-speaker (Trail) or eight-speaker (SR5) CD stereo system with XM satellite radio capability. A premium 15-speaker JBL audio system is available, and adds Bluetooth, iPod and MP3 control. When it's time to tailgate before the big game, the 4Runner's premium JBL sound system even has a "party mode" that biases output to the rear of the vehicle and cranks up the bass.
Safety is a big concern with the new 4Runner as well, and all models get the Star Safety System, which is Toyota's name for a slate of electronic aids including stability control (VSC), traction control, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), brake assist and ABS. Passive safety features include eight standard airbags for front, side and knee airbags in the front row, and side curtain bags for the second and third rows.
Toyota's foray into the telematics field with Safety Connect also makes its way into the 2010 4Runner, and is available both with and without the optional navigation system. Safety Connect offers: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button and Roadside Assistance. Though it's a subscription-based service, a one-year trial subscription is included with the purchase price of equipped vehicles.

Bob Baker teams up with Rancho Santa Fe filmmaker to create Korean War Documentary

Originally published by the Rancho Santa Fe Review Jan 1, 2009.

Bob Baker was 21 years old, a corporal in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea, and he didn’t expect to see another sunrise. “As I lay on my bunk trying to get some rest, I realized that this just might be the last day of my life. Our upcoming mission was so dangerous that I felt I probably would not survive the patrol. At that point I realized how much I wanted to get back home after this war. I made my peace with God then. I prayed and asked him to spare me if He could. I made a pact with Him. If He spared me that night, then I would return home, get married, have six children (whom I would raise as good Catholics), go to college, and be successful in the business world,” Baker later wrote.
Baker did survive that night patrol in June 1953, and he largely fulfilled his promises: He has been married to his wife, Sherrill, for 54 years, and the couple has five children and six grandchildren. Baker followed his father into the automobile business and is president of Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., which owns six auto dealerships in San Diego County. Now, Baker, 77, plans to spend up to $1 million of his money, through his charitable foundation, to tell the story of Outpost Harry, a hill in North Korea 60 miles north of the South Korean capital of Seoul. U.S. and allied forces stationed at Outpost Harry held off a furious eight-day assault by enemy troops just weeks before the Korean War ended in July 1953.
Baker, a Rancho Santa Fe resident, hired fellow Ranch resident Glenn Palmedo-Smith, a filmmaker, to create a documentary about the battle for Outpost Harry, which took place from June 10-18, 1953, an event both men said has been largely forgotten by history. While Baker and Palmedo-Smith could not provide precise figures, they said several thousand U.S. and United Nations troops fought off thousands of Chinese and North Korean soldiers to hold the strategic hill, which protected a valley leading directly to Seoul. They said the U.N. side suffered hundreds of casualties, and an even larger number perished on the Chinese-North Korean side. More than 80,000 rounds of artillery were fired by the enemy each night during the battle, and waves of Chinese soldiers attacked on the ground, some reaching the U.S. trenches and engaging in hand-to-hand combat, they said. Baker was a paratrooper assigned to an intelligence and reconnaissance platoon with the Army’s 15th Regiment, Third Infantry Division. His platoon’s job was to make forays, or patrols, to assess enemy troop strength and positions. They also brought back prisoners of war captured in battle and engaged in frequent skirmishes themselves, Baker said.
Baker was awarded a Bronze Star for his role in one such skirmish, and said he was recommended for a second, which he never received. In the years since the war, Baker said he didn’t think a lot about the traumatic events he endured. That changed in recent years when his grandchildren asked him about the war, and he found out about a group of Outpost Harry survivors who meet each year at different locations around the country. After meeting with the ex-soldiers and hearing their stories, Baker said, he decided a documentary was needed. “These guys who were on Outpost Harry have been basically praying their story could be told,” Baker said. “I’m probably the most successful of the survivors of Outpost Harry,” and the only one who could afford to commission such a documentary, Baker said. “We hope this documentary will show the pain of the soldiers who had to keep it inside after going to battle and killing people.”
Baker contacted Palmedo-Smith after hearing about another film he made called “The Hungry Women,” which is based on the story of Ian Spiro, a Rancho Santa Fe resident who police say killed his family and then committed suicide. After the 1992 deaths, rumors swirled that Spiro was a spy with Middle East connections, and Palmedo Smith said he was never satisfied by the conclusions of police investigators. Another documentary, about an African-American artist named Ellis Ruley, whom Palmedo Smith believes may have been the victim of foul play, called “Just South of Eden,” is being edited. So far, Palmedo-Smith said, he has taped some 300 hours of inter-views with Outpost Harry survivors around the United States, including two generals and former Army nurses. The documentary will also include battle reenactments and animated sequences. The film’s working title is “Hold at All Costs: the Battle of Outpost Harry, the Story of Forgotten Warriors of a Forgotten Battle of a Forgotten War.” Palmedo-Smith said he wants to include interviews with North and South Korean and Chinese soldiers who fought in the battle for Outpost Harry. Earlier this month, he spent 10 days in South Korea and China trying to establish contacts in the two countries, and with the government of North Korea. Among his ideas for the documentary, said Palmedo-Smith, is a reunion of ex-soldiers from all sides of the conflict at the site of the Outpost Harry battle, which reportedly remains an untouched no-man’s land. Film crews would document the placement of a plaque commemorating all who had died there. While he admits such a reunion is a long shot, especially if it involved North Korean and Chinese war veterans, Palmedo- Smith said, he will keep working on the plan as the rest of the project moves forward. “It will be the first time the combatants will be able to hug, shake hands… or maybe start fighting again,” he said. “Who knows what magic might happen? There will definitely be tears.” Baker and Palmedo-Smith have approached PBS television to offer the documentary for national airing. Baker said he doesn’t expect to make any money from the project, and the only concession Palmedo-Smith is seeking would be a commitment by the network to run more than 1,000 public service announcements promoting the documentary before its first scheduled broadcast. The two hope to complete the project in time for the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War in June 2010. Baker’s fellow Outpost Harry survivors are thrilled about the documentary project, said Jerry Cunningham, the founder and current reunion chairman of the Outpost Harry Survivors Association.
The group has about 250 members across the country, said Cunningham, who lives in Columbia, South Carolina and suffered shrapnel wounds to his leg during the battle. “Everybody is saying ‘hallelujah,” said Cunningham of the video project. “To us it’s a big feather in our hats.”

2010 Volkswagen GTI San Diego

For nearly three decades, the Volkswagen GTI has represented a potent combination of sports car-like finesse and tuned driving excitement in a versatile hatchback design. The all-new 2010 GTI ushers in the sixth generation of Volkswagen’s “hot hatch” lineage, and continues the evolution of an award-winning formula that has impressed driving enthusiasts across the globe.

With its fully redesigned exterior, including a more aggressive front end, cleaner side profile, and sleeker hatch area, the GTI upholds its sporty nature. New interior enhancements help set the GTI apart not only from the competition, but also previous generations, and allow both the driver and passengers to enjoy
total control and comfort. Starting at $23,290, the 2010 GTI stays true to its heritage by providing a dynamic driving experience at an affordable price, and is ready to reward its owners with every start of the ignition.

Under the hood, the latest version of the GTI utilizes the acclaimed 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder gasoline engine, with FSI direct fuel injection and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters. Bred for smooth, top-notch performance, the engine features an advanced, fully-electronic management system that combines drive-by-wire throttle control and FSI direct fuel injection to cut back on emissions while increasing overall fuel efficiency and power.
Producing 200 horsepower at 5,100 rpm, and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from 1,800 all the way up to 5,000 rpm, the GTI’s 2.0-liter engine is prepared to take to the road with force.

With the standard six-speed manual transmission, the GTI can go from a zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, and on to an electronically limited 130 mph top speed. Power delivery remains smooth and direct across the rpm range, allowing for a swift, 7.5 second run from 37 to 62 mph in fifth gear, and finishes with a redline of 6,500 rpm. In terms of fuel economy, the 2.0T engine and six-speed manual transmission deliver an EPA-estimated 31 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in city driving. For drivers who want the performance of a traditional manual transmission with the precision and ease of use of an automatic gearbox, the GTI is available with an optional automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG®) transmission. This technologically advanced six-speed transmission incorporates an automatic dualclutch system that instantly engages and disengages gears without the need for a clutch pedal. With a special computer controlling the process, one clutch is engaged on the next gear needed while the clutch from the previous gear is released. The results are crisp, quick shifts without the loss of power that is experienced with a traditional manual gearbox, and the ability for the GTI to reach 60 mph in 6.7 seconds from a standstill. The 2010 GTI’s fuel economy is improved when equipped with the DSG transmission, which attains an EPAestimated 32 mpg in highway driving, and 24 mpg in city driving. Those owners who opt for the DSG transmission can switch between full automatic operation, which requires no additional action beyond moving the gear shift lever to the “D” position, and automated manual operation, which enables the driver to control every gear change. Volkswagen Tiptronic® lets the driver shift up and down as he prefers, using either the finger-operated paddles mounted to the GTI’s steering wheel, or by tapping the gearshift selector up or down. As an added performance bonus with the DSG transmission, a Launch Control program can be enabled, which, when the car is stopped, allows the engine to build revs before the first clutch is engaged, and creates a more perfect launch with controlled wheel-spin.

Lexus HS 250h San Diego

Never again let it be said that high-mileage hybrids are grim, joyless, or Spartan. The 2010 Lexus HS 250h sedan is the smallest and most economical car Lexus has ever built, but it’s unquestionably luxurious. Lexus has noted that more than 60 percent of luxury-car buyers would consider a hybrid if one were available. Well, now those buyers have a new option.

Official EPA mileage for the HS 250h is 35 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. Lexus says the HS 250h qualify as a Super-Ultra-Low-Emission-Vehicle (SULEV). The new Lexus HS will go on sale in August 2009.

The HS 250h is the Lexus brand’s first dedicated hybrid, just as the Prius was for its parent brand Toyota. Previous Lexus hybrids were adaptations of existing vehicles, including the popular RX 400h crossover—replaced for 2010 by the RX 450h—the GS 450h sports sedan, and the full-size luxury barge LS 600h. But the HS will be sold just as a hybrid, with no gasoline-only version.

The comparison to the 2010 Prius is apt, since the two cars share the same basic platform. They both ride on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, though the Lexus HS 250h is 2 inches wider, half an inch higher, and a full 9 inches longer than its hatchback relative. The HS also has a larger 2.4-liter engine—similar to the one in the Toyota Camry Hybrid—against the 1.8-liter engine used by the 2010 Prius. The complete hybrid system in the Lexus is fully 40 percent more powerful than that of the Prius: 187 horsepower compared to 134.

Lacking the Prius’s high roofline and abrupt vertical tail, the more conventional sedan styling of the HS is marginally less aerodynamic than its hatchback sibling, with a drag coefficient of 0.27 rather than the Prius’s 0.25. Lexus has never offered a hatchback, so given that the HS is a relatively short five-seat sedan, that’s still a respectable figure.

Lexus buyers expect luxury, reliability, and features, and the HS 250h delivers those in spades. It offers such optional electronic gadgetry as Bluetooth connectivity, a heads-up instrument display, a front-view monitor with a 190-degree angle of view, and adaptive cruise control. Its navigation system incorporates real-time traffic and weather, and casual-speech voice recognition. It even lets the owner customize the levels of haptic feedback in the mouse-like controller mounted on the console.

The HS also includes leather trim, a moon roof, and swathes of insulation and thicker materials to reduce the noise, vibration and harshness that every Lexus owner dreads. Adding to the refinement is a sound-deadening inner layer in the windshield, exhaust flow optimized to cut noise, and even slower, softer-closing power window switches from the uber-luxurious LS sedan.

In the end, the HS is a new kind of car for Lexus. But if Toyota’s luxury brand has demonstrated anything over its 20 years, it’s that it can pioneer new ideas and make them a sales success.

Mazda2 Coming To The U.S.

This just in: that fantabulous little Mazda we've admired from afar for the past couple years, the Mazda2 (also known as the Demio in Japan), is coming to all of North America, the U.S. included. President and CEO of Mazda's North American Operations Jim O'Sullivan has just told the automaker's top dealers that the diminutive Mazda, which shares its platform with the also incoming Ford Fiesta, will go on sale in the U.S. around the end of 2010. That's just about the same time that the Mazda2 will go on sale in Canada, as well.

O'Sullivan cites the changing tastes and attitudes of consumers towards smaller cars as shifting the business case in favor of selling the Mazda2 here in the States below. While no other information was given, dealers were told they can expect to see the North American-spec Mazda2 debut later this year at the 2009 .

What this means for Ford and the similar-in-almost-every-way-but-styling Fiesta remains to be seen. Knowing that the Mazda2 is on its way, would you reconsider buying a Fiesta in favor of test driving the same thing with a little extra Zoom Zoom?
